About South Kensington

South Kensington is in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The post code SW7 covers South Kensington and parts of Knightsbridge and it has some of the most exclusive and expensive properties in the world.

South Kensington is a very cosmopolitan area, home to many French people, due to the fact that the French Consulate and the Lycee Francais Charles de Gaulle is located here, as well as to Spanish, American and Middle Eastern people.

A plethora of restaurants, bars and pubs cater for every taste and for those hungry for knowledge there are The Natural History Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Science Museum, Baden- Powell House as well as Imperial College.

The area was originally mainly agricultural until the mid 19th century. After the Great Exhibition of 1851 the Commissioners of the exhibition bought a large area which is now Exhibition Road to create a home for the arts and sciences which is why South Kensington is often referred to as the Museum Quarter.

Famous residents:
George Wallis, FSA, (1811-1891) museum curator, artist and keeper of the Fine Art Collection at South Kensington.
Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree (1853-1917) Actor Manager
Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) author and artist
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941)
John Malkovitch
Adele (singer)
and many more.
